CODE OF STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Because the school calls upon all to be responsible and accountable - to care, to discipline, and to challenge - the following have been established as "expected behavior" to help foster accountability, responsibility, and discipline within the students.
NOTE: “The student is a Holy Cross Elementary student at all times. A student who engages in conduct, whether inside or outside the school, that is detrimental to the reputation of the school, may be disciplined by school officials.”
I. The students are expected to practice:
A. Academic Responsibility
1. Doing homework assignments
2. Having test papers, progress reports, and report cards, signed and returned promptly
3. Having materials needed for class
4. Completing class assignments
5. Completing make-up work as required by the teacher
6. Using the school internet in accordance with the policy
B. Personal Responsibility
1. Complying with the dress code - non-compliance will be noted on the report card
2. Reporting to school on time
3. Respecting school property
4. Complying with school rules
5. Replacing at current value any lost or damaged school property (books, etc.)
C. Social Responsibility
1. Behaving properly in class, in church, on the playground, (remember, do not throw rocks), in the cafeteria, during extended day care, in the restroom, and all after school activities
2. Respecting those in authority
3. Respecting classmates in class, in church, on the playground, in the cafeteria, during arrival and dismissal procedures, during extended day care, in the restroom, and all after school activities
D. Any other responsibility deemed proper by the teacher and the principal.
II. The students are expected to restrain from practicing the following:
A. Acts that are harmful to others and oneself
1. Verbal abuse or *harassment (including that of sexual nature) toward another student, a teacher or person in authority
2. Using vulgar or obscene gestures or language
3. Defying one in authority
4. Physical abuse or attack on a teacher or on a fellow student
5. Drinking, smoking, using drugs, or any *violent or aggressive acts
6. Possessing firearms or weapons
B. Acts that are harmful to property such as defacing property where damage is incurred.
C. Any other actions that the principal and the teachers deem to be harmful.
*Harassment – demeaning treatment of one who does not consent to the treatment. This may take the form of verbal, written, visual, physical threats or demands, and retaliation.
*Violence – All threats of violence will be taken seriously and consequences will follow. A non-humor zone will be followed with harassment, threats and violence. (“Just joking” will not be accepted as a defense.)
When a student fails to comply with these responsibilities as outlined, he/she will be disciplined by the teacher. If the problem continues, parents will be contacted. For more serious problems, a conference among student, teacher, principal, and parents will be called. Suspension or expulsion may be employed if problems cannot be resolved.
